Key positions Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa need to target in the January transfer window

Leeds United's summer business was on the whole a very successful window. The club broke their transfer record to sign Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia, while Ben White was replaced by German international Robin Koch at the heart of defence.

Other additions including Diego Llorente and Raphinha arrived with much promise, but only the latter has delivered on the pitch so far, securing a 1-0 win over Everton last weekend.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Kalvin Phillips 'Paving the Way' mural on The Calls in Leeds City Centre, Victor Orta revealed the club had achieved "85-90%" of their intended business in the summer. However, that did leave room for manoeuvrings in the January window, which the Spaniard did not rule out as a possibility.

Central midfield continues to be an area in which Leeds United look light. Injuries to Pablo Hernandez and Jamie Shackleton have forced Marcelo Bielsa to get creative with his team selection and a similar spell on the sidelines for Mateusz Klich could spell disaster for the balance within this Leeds team.

The Pole is currently holding the midfield structure together having appeared in each of Leeds' ten Premier League games to date, and has arguably been Player of the Season so far. The club's failure to land Rodrigo De Paul in the summer means they may return to Udinese with an offer for the Argentine ball-carrier, while developments in La Liga mean that Levante could be keen to offload Jose Campana.

Other names have also been suggested, including Stade Brest's standout midfielder Romain Faivre. The ex-Monaco player has finally been granted first-team football at Ligue 1 level and is thriving with the increased responsibility.

His style mirrors that of De Paul's and could be a cut-price option if the £40 million demands of Udinese are not lowered. Similarly, Angelo Fulgini at Angers could be an alternative to bolster Leeds' midfield ranks, with the 24-year-old possessing vast experience in the top flight with the Angevin club.

A contingency plan should also be in place to add another winger or attacking midfielder in the event that Manchester City's demands for Jack Harrison next summer are deemed unacceptable.

It would be expected for Harrison to make his move to Elland Road permanent but with nothing guaranteed as yet, a left-sided midfielder should be near the top of Marcelo Bielsa's list of transfer targets in case a deal cannot be struck.

The same can be said for left-back where midfield duo Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski currently share the starting role. In an age where full-backs are of greater importance than ever before, Leeds must be on the lookout for fresh, young, attacking talent that will supplement the current options at the club.
