Key Phil Foden characteristic identified that has made Man City star 'undroppable

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has hailed Phil Foden, calling the young midfielder “un-droppable”.

The academy graduate starred once again on Saturday as City eased to victory in the derby against Manchester United.

Foden proved to be a constant thorn in the side of the United defence, linking up with Joao Cancelo time and time again down the left-hand side as Aaron Wan-Bissaka wasn’t given a moment’s peace.

The 21-year-old was unlucky not to get a goal of his own in the 2-0 win, having seen a shot hit the post during the second half, and he could have easily claimed an assist as City dominated from kick-off.

Nevertheless, his performance at Old Trafford once again underlined the talent he possesses, and underlined just why Pep Guardiola has been such a big fan of his over the years.

Foden is currently keeping the likes of Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez out of the side with his performances, and Lescott doesn’t see an easy way back into the side for the pair.

“Foden is not in-form. That is just the level he plays at,” Lescott told City’s website.

“He is un-droppable at the moment and that is a massive credit to him because of the quality of players we have.

“As an actual fan of the club, for him to be a part of the derby and play in this game is a massive honour for him and his family, and every City fan, knowing he is one of them.

“What’s different with Phil is his obsession with the game and improving makes him what he is.

“I love the enthusiasm he has for the game and I think it’s enhanced because he’s playing for his boyhood club.”
