Key Member of Celtics Rotation Underwent Surgery on Injured Hand Ahead of Free Agency

Celtics forward Grant Williams, a soon-to-be restricted free agent this summer, underwent successful surgery on his left hand on Friday after tearing a ligament in March, the team announced.

Williams played through the pain and proved to be a key member of Boston’s rotation in the Eastern Conference finals against the Heat. The 24-year-old fluctuated in and out of the lineup for Boston in the final three months of the season, but his injury could have been a contributing factor.

Williams is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in the fall, and should be ready for a full return to basketball activities in the next 6-to-8 weeks.

The 24-year-old wing scored 8.1 points and added 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in 26 minutes per contest this season for the Celtics, which were all career-bests.

The Celtics will be able to match any offer sheet that Williams signs this offseason with another team. He is also eligible to negotiate a contract extension with Boston if the two sides agree to go that route and take him off the restricted free agent market altogether.
