The Queen was the longest reigning Monarch in British history, and the longevity of her service was acknowledged by thousands of people. Today we remember some of the landmark moments in her life.

She was born on April 21 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair. The address was a fairly anonymous townhouse on a busy London street. At this point in her life Princess Elizabeth was the daughter of the King's younger son and not expected to take the throne.

Her first solo public engagement as Princess Elizabeth was on April 21 1942, when the 16-year-old inspected the Grenadier Guards at Windsor Castle. On Victory in Europe Day on May 8 1945 Princess Elizabeth joined the throng of crowds in London, with an ATS uniform cap pulled down low to disguise her face.

There were more than 2,000 journalists and 500 photographers from 92 nations on the Coronation route in 1953, when Princess Elizabeth was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. The Coronation Service was broadcast live on the BBC and watched by millions.

In 1966 The Queen presented England football captain Bobby Moore with the World Cup Trophy. The World Cup Final attracted a then record British television audience with 32.3 million viewers.

The Queen opened the new section of the Victoria Line in 1969, opened the Piccadilly Line extension to Heathrow Airport in 1977, visited Baker Street Station to mark the 150th anniversary of the London Underground in 2013. She visited the Crossrail construction site at Bond Street Station in 2016.

On September 9 2015, The Queen became the longest reigning Monarch in British history, surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. In a speech on the day she said: "Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception - but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness."
