Key dates set to shape Everton's season after 2020/21 fixtures announced

Everton have learned how their 2020/21 season will shape up after the Premier League fixtures were announced on Thursday.

The Blues face an interesting opening to the term, facing two of last season's top six inside the opening six matches of the campaign, with one of those the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

December looks to be a tricky month for the Blues as they face Chelsea, Leicester City, Arsenal and Man City all in quick succession.

Carlo Ancelotti will have his sights firmly set on European qualification and now can plan ahead for what might prove to be the most difficult periods of the campaign.

Here are some key dates that he will have his eye on.

September 12 2020 - Tottenham Hotspur (A)

This is certainly a tough way to start the season for Everton.

Ancelotti's side will travel to London to face Spurs in the opening match of the 2020/21 campaign and will be looking to get off to a flying start if possible.

The Blues are yet to win at Tottenham's new stadium, having drawn and lost their previous two games in the ground since its opening.

But they will get an early opportunity to put that record straight this time around.

October 17 2020 - Liverpool (H)

A Merseyside derby so early in the season is sure to cause a bit of a stir.

Liverpool make their way to Goodison Park in the fifth match of the new term to make up what will be an interesting beginning to the campaign for the Blues.

The fixture falls exactly 10 years since Everton's last victory over their nearest rivals, with Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta securing a 2-0 win in 2010.

It seems a perfect way to put that record straight, then.

December 26 2020 - Sheffield United (A)

Everton are away from home this time around on Boxing Day, having spent last season in the comfort of Goodison Park.

At this stage, of course, we have no idea how many (if any) fans will be allowed inside stadiums when this fixture comes around - so it may not matter too much.

But the Blues can be pleased enough with their Boxing Day fixture, having beat Sheffield United 1-0 towards the end of last term.

The last time Everton were away on Boxing Day, of course, they secured a brilliant 5-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

January 2 2021 - West Ham (H)

There are currently no fixtures set for New Year's Day, but this is the closest match Everton have to that date.

And they will see in 2021 at Goodison Park at least.

Again there's no indication yet on how many supporters might be at the ground to see this game, but it could well be an interesting one.

David Moyes will return to Merseyside with his West Ham side, who Everton usually have a good record against on their own turf.

February 20 2021 - Liverpool (A)

Without a win at Anfield since 1999, could this finally be the year Everton put that sorry record to one side?

As already mentioned, the Blues haven't beaten their nearest rivals at any venue for far too long, but to have over 20 years without a victory on their soil is wrong.

This fixture comes straight after Everton will visit newly-promoted Leeds and Manchester United, before welcoming Fulham to Goodison Park.

An interesting run of fixtures, there.

May 23 2021 - Man City (A)

What a way to end the season this is.

Arguably one of the toughest dates on the calendar for any side is the day they travel to the Etihad to face Pep Guardiola's Man City.

This time around, that's how Everton will be closing out their 2020/21 season.

How much will either side have to play for? Who knows. But if the Blues do need a result on the final day for potential European qualification, it won't be an easy task.
