Key date for when future of Broadmarsh Centre will be discussed revealed

The date for when the future of Nottingham's half-demolished Broadmarsh Centre will be discussed has been revealed.

A report will be presented to Nottingham City Council's Executive Board on October 20, setting out the way forward for the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

The site is currently partially demolished, after owners intu went into administration earlier this year.

There have been widespread calls for something other than a conventional shopping centre to be built in its place.

The previous scheme already aimed to be more of a ‘destination’ than a traditional shopping centre, with more emphasis on entertainment, from bowling alleys to late-night bars.

Before the new report is presented, spending is needed to cover the "continuing site arrangements" and for "essential site safety measures".

A total of £176,048 will be spent on the following, as set out in a city council delegated decision:

"To extend the contract awarded to Sir Robert McAlpine to allow them to continue as Principal Contractor and to undertake physical work to hold the site. (£116,048)

"Appointment through the Perfect Circle framework of the professional team to provide services to develop the scope and design of further demobilisation works that are required to ensure the site can be held in a stable state for the medium term. (£30,000)

"Works to facilitate signage to the Lister Gate right of way (£10,000).

"Works to remediate defective floor coverings in Lister Gate right of way, clearance of debris, and ongoing statutory surveys. (£20,000)"

Shops within the centre still remain shut. It is just the walkthrough that is open each day between 7am and 7pm.

Intu closed the doors through the centre citing health and safety reasons after the firm's collapse into administration.

The walkthrough which connects Collin Street to Lister Gate reopened at 7am on Friday, August 28, after a £343,500 rescue package was previously agreed - which the city council says was a priority for Nottingham.

It is deemed a public right of way and provides a key route in and out of the city centre connecting to the railway station.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live: “With the Broadmarsh Centre under city council control, it’s important we continue to maintain the site and ensure it is safe given the key walkway joining Collin Street and Lister Gate and the site’s potential as part of the city’s long term vision for regeneration.

"The decisions taken here allow us to keep the site safe while we consider, with the general public and the help of experts, the future of the Broadmarsh Centre site.”
