Key Catholic figure to leave Cardiff after more than 40 years service

One of Cardiff's most respected priests and the city's last benedictine monk is to leave after 43 years of service.

Father Christopher Delaney will leave St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church on Kings Road at the end of this week to return to Buckfast Abbey in Devon.

Delaney is well-known throughout the Catholic community, and baptised Charlotte Church and holds her parents among his many friends he has made while pastoring the church in Canton. Listen to his farewell speech here.

Fr Delaney also helped set up a soup kitchen in the city – which used to run out of empty premises in the city centre. He set up a folk group at the church and was the school chaplin of nearby St Catherine's Comprehensive and spent many years taking children on trips to Europe. He has become a widely known figure in the Catholic community.

"I'm leaving to return to Buckfast – I have been called to take up work within education. I have enjoyed my time here in Cardiff and made many great friends."
