Key advice for holidaymakers hunting cut-price trips after Covid rules eased

Spain and France have become the most-searched destinations since it was announced UK travel restrictions will be scrapped this week giving a massive boost to holidaymakers. But the UK Civil Aviation Authority is reminding travellers to make sure their long-awaited hassle-free holidays are financially protected.

The UK Government has announced that from 4am on Friday, all remaining Covid-19 international travel restrictions are to be lifted for England and Northern Ireland. Passengers who are not fully vaccinated will no longer have to take Covid tests before and after travelling to the UK, nor will it be necessary to complete a passenger locator form

There are still limited restrictions in place for tourists arriving back in Scotland and Wales, including the requirement to complete a passenger locator form. But passengers are still advised to purchase a trip covered by the ATOL protection scheme, which is built into the cost of air package holidays, to provide financial cover in the unlikely event that a travel company stops trading.

If a travel company with an ATOL ceases trading, the scheme protects customers who have booked package holidays with them, making sure they don’t get stuck abroad or lose money. Check atol.org for more information and to check which travel providers offer ATOL protection.

People planning an overseas trip will still need to be aware of other countries' entry rules, and travellers should continue to check the Government’s travel advice to keep up to date with various entry requirements.

Michael Budge, head of ATOL at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “While many of us will be excited to book holidays again, it is vital to make sure that all aspects of your holiday are financially protected. Booking an ATOL protected holiday, paying by credit card and taking out travel insurance provides extra certainty that holidaymakers can book with confidence and get back to travelling again.” Here are some key points for anyone heading to the sun.

Top tips for holidaymakers

  • Book an ATOL protected holiday - This protects customers who have booked package holidays with them making sure they don’t get stuck abroad or lose money – see atol.org for more information.
  • Use a credit card when booking - This allows consumers to benefit from enhanced purchase protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
  • Take out travel insurance - This provides protection from cancellations, missed transport, medical emergencies and lost/stolen items.
  • Check your destination country’s entry requirements - Check the Government’s travel advice.
