Kew Gardens launches huge new Children’s Garden for summer 2019

Kew Gardens has announced plans to open a huge new Children’s Garden for summer 2019.

The new attraction is 10,000 metres squared, roughly the size of 40 tennis courts, and has been designed as an active space for children to explore and enjoy.

Kew will open the Chidren's Garden on May 18 this year, marking the most significant new development at the historic site in over a decade.

The Children’s Garden, which is aimed primarily at children from the ages of two to 12, is split in separate areas — the Earth Garden, Air Garden, Sun Garden and the Water Garden — all of which recognise elements essential to the growth a development of plants and flowers.

Suzie Jewell, Children’s Garden Designer, RBG Kew said: “With the Children’s Garden we really hoped to design and create a unique space for children to play in, that would not only be fun and stimulate their imagination, but also give them a different perspective on how the plants grow and why they are so important.

“Part of what makes this space so special is that we had existing trees on site around which to map the paths and play areas — it became a play area among the trees – something different in London. I hope that this will lead to a deeper connection with nature and a lifelong love of plants.”
