The rarest and most valuable coins in circulation have been revealed - so get checking your spare change in case you’re sitting on a mint.

The most sought-after coin right now according to the latest scarcity index from Change Checker is still the Kew Gardens 50p.

The scarcity index looks at the rarest 50 pence pieces, A to Z 10p coins and £2s currently in circulation.

Experts at Coin Hunter say the Kew Gardens 50p can sell for an average of £156 on eBay, but we’ve also seen some examples fetching up to £200 on the auction site.

Elsewhere, the most valuable 10p you may find in your pocket is the World Wide Web alphabet coin. One of these coins recently sold for £10.50 online.

In terms of £2 coins, top of the list is the Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland coin that we’ve seen sell for around £80 on eBay.

Here are the rarest coins according to Change Checker:

The Kew Gardens 50p is one of the rarest coins (PA)

The Kew Gardens 50p is once again the rarest 50 pence piece currently in circulation, according to Change Checker.

Created by Christopher Le Brun RA, its features the famous Chinese Pagoda from the gardens being intertwined by a leafy climber.

This coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759, and there are only 210,000 in circulation.

The next most sought-after coin is the 2011 triathlon 50p, which was released as part of the 2012 London Olympics coin collection.

There are around 1,163,500 of these in circulation, with its design featuring someone running, cycling and swimming, and experts at Coin Hunter say these go for around £8 on eBay in good condition.

Finally, the third rarest is the 2011 football 50p, again part of the 2012 London Olympics collection.

It features a diagram explaining the offside rule and one of these coins could fetch up to £11 on eBay.

Rarest 10p coins - worth up to £10.50

The scarcity index of rare 10 pence pieces is made of the alphabet A to Z collection, released in 2018 and 2019 to celebrate all things British.

As you'd expect, there are 26 coins in the set to correspond with the 26 letters in the alphabet.

The rarest one from that collection is W for World Wide Web, launched to mark the invention of the internet.

Its design features the letter W surrounded by a spiderweb. Around 220,000 were issued for circulation in 2018, followed by a minting of another 63,000 coins in 2019.

The second rarest coin from the A to Z collection is R for Robin, which features a cute bird sitting on the letter R surrounded by snowflakes. When we checked online today, one of these had sold for £8 on eBay.

Like the W for World Wide Web coin, around 220,000 were issued for circulation in 2018 but a slightly higher figure of 64,000 were made in 2019.

Third on the scarcity list is Y for Yeoman Warder, launched to celebrate the guards of the Tower of London.

The design itself depicts one Yeoman Warder posing next to the letter Y. If you have one, the highest it'll likely go for on eBay is around £8.

Around 220,000 were circulated in 2018, while another 63,000 were released in 2019.

Rarest £2 coins - worth up to £80

Coins to celebrate the Commonwealth Games in 2002 have topped the £2 scarcity index yet again.

The most sought-after is the Northern Ireland version, which comes ahead of three other editions designed for England, Wales and Scotland.

All the different editions feature the same base design and you can only identify them by their respective flag.

If you've got the Northern Ireland version, of which there are 485,500 in circulation, it could sell for up to £80 on eBay.

The next rarest version is the England edition, followed by the Scotland take on the coin.

For the England version, there are 650,500 in circulation and recent sales have seen it go for around £30.

Or if you have the Scotland coin, of which there are 771,750 in existence, sales range between £25 and £30.
