Kevin the Carrot causes chaos and 5am queues at Aldi Birkenhead

Aldi finally released this year's Kevin the Carrot toys across its stores this morning and it's safe to say demand for the lovable character was huge.

Despite stores not opening until 8am, customers still queued outside its Birkenhead store based on Laird Street from around 5am.

Aldi has described this morning's demand as "unprecedented"  as the range sold out within an hour in some stores.

This year, Aldi sent two million toys out across more than 800 of its stores to help and limited customers to two toys each.

According to Aldi's Birkenhead store, there was an incident involving two customers who both wanted the same toy. The customers had both been queueing since 5am.

Kevin the Carrot first made a name for himself in 2016, but last year saw demand increase for the toy.

This year's range was extended to include Christmas jumpers and pyjamas.

Across Liverpool, customers packed Aldi stores this morning with reports of Halewood's store selling out of the tomato and sprouts toys by 8.05am.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of Buying from Aldi UK said: "Our colleagues opened the doors at 8am this morning and were met with an unprecedented number of customers looking to get their hands on Kevin the Carrot toys and his other friends, including Russell Sprout.

"We know our Kevin the Carrot soft toys and merchandise are incredibly popular with our customers and this year we increased the amount on offer.

"To give as many Kevin fans as possible the chance to buy the range, we have limited purchases to two soft toys per customer, but as with all of our Specialbuys products, once they're gone, they're gone."
