Kevin Spacey recently revealed that the accruing cost of defending himself from his litany of sexual assault allegations has dug so deep into his finances that he can no longer afford a home to live in. But the two-time Oscar-winning actor thinks that he’s just one hit away from making a comeback.
Nobody should be homeless. That shouldn’t be a controversial statement, because no matter how bad your finances get, you should always be able to get a place where you can shelter yourself until you can afford to get gainful employment. But more importantly, and more relevant here, nobody deserves to be sexually assaulted. And while Spacey has never been formally convicted of sexual assault, it’s very unlikely that someone who has an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to all his accusers over the years has never been sexually inappropriate with any of his co-workers.
The news of the House Of Cards star losing his home is not necessarily surprising. Just recently, Spacey had an interview with Piers Morgan where he revealed to the British host that his Baltimore house was facing foreclosure because he could no longer keep up with his hefty legal bills.
According to Variety, he has since lost his home and is now shuttling from hotel to Airbnb until things can finally stabilize for him. Spacey explained, “I’m going where the work is. I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain… The costs over these last seven years have been astronomical. I’ve had very little coming in and everything going out.”
That’s not to say that the embattled former Hollywood star is not seeking other means to make ends meet. According to Spacey, his manager Evan Lowenstein — who he didn’t explain how he pays — has renewed contact with some of the biggest names in show business. The Se7en star said that most directors are just waiting on permission to get him back on screens and that he is in touch with some “extremely powerful people.”
Spacey shared, “So, my feeling is if Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino call [my manager, Evan Lowenstein] tomorrow, it will be over,” he added. “I will be incredibly honored and delighted when that level of talent picks up the phone.”
Spacey’s homeless situation notwithstanding, he does come off tone-deaf and insensitive towards what the fans want. He has never really shown any shred of regret or at least grown from that moment. And if some of these crimes are eventually proven, he should do time behind bars.
Hollywood is fickle. So he might be right; they might just welcome him back in the fold with open arms. He is, after all, their peer, and Hollywood has a history of awarding figures like Roman Polanski with an Oscar after he admitted to his sex crimes.
But what Spacey forgets is that filmmaking is a populist sport. It’s not all about Scorsese and Tarantino — as beloved as they are, they also have flops in their filmography. If fans purposefully choose to ignore his work, the same people he hopes to be in contact with will just continue to ignore his calls.
