Kevin Sinfield knighthood support soars with petition backed by thousands

A petition to get Kevin Sinfield a knighthood has received a staggering 43,000 signatures.

Calls to grant Sinfield a title of 'Sir' has been heavily called for since his latest challenge for Rob Burrow, which saw him run 101 miles in 24 hours.

Sinfield has raised millions for Burrow and MNDA since his team-mate was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, and people now want him to be recognised with the ultimate honour.

The former Leeds Rhinos captain was awarded an OBE back in June, but people are already calling for more.

The petition on Change is closing in on 50,000 votes as the weight behind the calls continues to grow.

Sinfield would be the first rugby league player to ever receive a knighthood should he be granted one.

Last week, Andy Burnham joined the calls for Sinfield to be recognised.

He said: "What you've done for Rob, but for anybody affected by motor neurone disease, you've given people hope and you've shown that friendship really means something deep and personal.

"That is priceless. But to the powers that be in this country I would say isn't it about time that this great sport of rugby league, the bonds that it builds between the people who play the game, isn't about time it was recognised? I think it is. I know a lot of people want to see that and hear those immortal words, arise Sir Kevin."
