Kevin Sheedy's time at Waterford FC ends after just nine league games in charge

Kevin Sheedy and Mike Newell have left Premier Division basement club Waterford FC.

Former Ireland star Sheedy watched his side record a seventh defeat in their opening nine league games in Monday's 3-0 reversal at Shamrock Rovers.

The club's academy chief, Mike Geoghan, will be at the helm for Saturday's encounter with Drogheda United.

"Waterford FC, Kevin Sheedy and Mike Newell have parted company by mutual consent," the club confirmed.

"We wish to thank both Kevin and Mike for their service to the club during these difficult times and we wish them both the very best for the future."

Newell was only starting a four-game touchline ban in Tallaght this week and, in keeping with a bizarre protest at the standard of match officials in the League, the Blues had only four substitutes on the bench - including a goalkeeper.

Sheedy only named two substitutes for the previous game against Dundalk and, the week before that, it was reported that the duo had left their posts after walked out of a training session at the WIT Arena after refusing to stage reconciliatory talks with club skipper Brian Murphy.

But Sheedy later insisted the rumours were unfounded and the pair continued in their role, although Murphy remained frozen out.

It is believed that Murphy and several other senior players had questioned the management's preparations ahead of the defeat to Bohemians last month.
