Kevin Sheedy looking for new Waterford recruits in the UK

Kevin Sheedy is using his contacts across Britain to source new players for Waterford.

The former Republic of Ireland international was a surprise appointment as Blues boss before Christmas.

But he and assistant manager Mike Newell - the ex-Blackburn Rovers striker - have only now finished their period of quarantine in Ireland.

Waterford have since seen Matty Smith and Sam Bone join St Pat’s while Bohemians snapped up Tyreke Wilson.

Sheedy told the club website: “Being in lockdown stuck with Mike for two weeks was a challenge in itself but we survived it.

“All joking aside, we’ve spent the two weeks locked down, reviewing potential signings from here in Ireland but also Scotland and England.

“We’ve a few contacts working on a few potential signings but we have the luxury of a bit of time, so we’ll use that to knuckle down and get a few onboard.”

Sheedy and Newell had been working in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab.

And Newell said: “I got the call from (Waterford owner) Lee Power when we were in Saudi. We were both looking for a challenge that was a bit closer to home.

“It was a no-brainer to come here. Sher (John Sheridan) couldn’t recommend the place high enough. After speaking with him, he made it clear that Waterford was a fantastic place to come to.”

And Blues assistant Newell added: “In terms of work, we’re here to try to implement our style of management.

“We can’t wave a magic wand and have that happen overnight, so we need some time and I’m sure the fans will give us the time we need."
