The search committee of Abyssinian Baptist Church, a prominent congregation in New York City, has announced its recommendation of Kevin R. Johnson as the next senior pastor. Johnson, the founding pastor of Dare to Imagine Church in Philadelphia, is set to lead the more than 200-year-old Abyssinian Baptist Church pending congregation approval.
The committee expressed confidence in Johnson's ability to uphold the institution's history and legacy. If approved, Johnson will become the first male senior pastor of Abyssinian, continuing a tradition that has been in place since the church's inception.
Located in Harlem, Abyssinian Baptist Church gained prominence during the tenure of Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., a highly influential figure in both the church and politics. The church has been a spiritual home to many notable New Yorkers, including Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Johnson, 50, previously served as an intern and assistant pastor under the late senior pastor Calvin O. Butts III, whose passing left the top position vacant in 2022. Johnson's educational background includes a degree from Morehouse College, a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Education from Columbia University.
Rev. Eboni Marshall Turman, a candidate in the pulpit search process, expressed her views on the selection, emphasizing the congregation's role in the final decision. Marshall Turman had raised concerns about the search process, which she felt lacked transparency and was overly lengthy.
Johnson's selection comes after a period of controversy surrounding the search committee, which faced a gender discrimination lawsuit from Marshall Turman. The committee and the church disputed the allegations, highlighting the congregation's ultimate authority in calling a pastor.
Johnson's emotional response to the news was evident during a service at Dare to Imagine Church, where he referenced a letter sent to the congregation. His journey from Bright Hope Baptist Church to founding Dare to Imagine Church reflects his commitment to ministry and service.
The congregation of Abyssinian Baptist Church will soon vote on Johnson's appointment, marking a significant moment in the church's history as it prepares to welcome a new leader to guide its community and mission.
