The cricketing break-up that will just run and run – Kevin Pietersen’s exile from the England team now overseen by Andrew Strauss – has been given the Our Tune treatment by Simon Bates and the BBC.
Recounted by Bates in typical Our Tune style, backed, as ever, by Nino Rota’s Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet, the former Radio 1 DJ tells the story of “triumph, betrayal and ultimately rejection” between the two men who “met at work” and whose “successful working relationship blossomed into something really special”.
We won’t spoil it by giving too much away, but Bates recounts how the pairing “shouldn’t really have worked. Kevin was always the outsider, Andrew liked detail and intelligent conversation” and how Pietersen “texted some old friends and said some really bad things about Andrew”.
Then there was the moment when “Andrew was overheard by friends calling Kevin names” and the long, drawn-out fallout that followed.
Forget about Soul Limbo, or Mambo No 5, or whatever Sky use – it could be the theme for English cricket’s summer.
