Kevin Phillips urges Sunderland to sign 'specialist right-back' Stephen O'Donnell

Kevin Phillips has urged Sunderland to sign specialist right-back Stephen O'Donnell amid transfer rumours.

The Black Cats legend believes O'Donnell's experience and "big game temperament" would be a fine addition to Lee Johnson's squad.

There's growing frustration among the Sunderland fan base given the shortage of full-backs at the club and time is ticking until the season curtain raiser against Wigan Athletic.

Phillips told Football Insider : “That’s a transfer that makes sense.

“They need that specialist right back and he was good against England at the Euros. He was unreal.

“He has that big game temperament and showed it in what was one of the biggest games at the Euros.

“He has that experience of playing for many clubs and I have no issues with him dropping into League One.

“I think he would be a very good signing for the club on the pitch and off it.”

Johnson was confident that he would bring in a 'couple' of players before the season begins.

The Wearsiders have tabled bids for Exeter's Josh Key and Jordan Gabriel of Nottingham Forest but nothing has come to fruition yet.
