Kevin Phillips urges Sunderland to make signing who could be a 'big player' for the Black Cats

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has urged the Black Cats to make Bailey Wright's loan move a permanent stay.

The Australia international defender joined Sunderland on a loan deal from Bristol City in January and his out of contract at the end of this season.

The 27-year-old started five games in succession as part of the Black Cats' back three but suffered an ankle ligament injury which curtailed his progress.

However, he revealed in April he was nearing a return to full fitness and he is likely to be available for Sunderland's last eight games - should the League One season resume.

Regardless, Phillips believes Sunderland should be doing everything they can to secure Wright's signing on a permanent basis this summer once his contract with the Robins expires.

“I watched him a couple of times live this season and he did really well," Phillips told Football Insider.

“He picked up his injury in the Oxford game that I was at. He had been a stalwart in that position and a leader.

“It all depends what happens with Sunderland and whether he wants to play in League One.

“But Sunderland will certainly look to if they can. He could turn out to be a big player for them.

“All clubs from the Premier League to League Two will be shopping for free agents so that could be a good option and a safe option for them.”
