Kevin Phillips perfectly sums up excitement surrounding Sunderland signing Leon Dajaku

Kevin Phillips is looking forward to seeing Leon Dajaku in a Sunderland shirt this season and believes he'll have 'serious ability'.

The 20-year-old came through VfB Stuttgart's academy before linking up with Bayern Munich.

The versatile forward has made two senior appearances for the Bundesliga giants and has joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan from Union Berlin.

The Bundesliga outfit took the forward on loan last season and made the move a permanent one prior to his Sunderland loan spell.

His arrival on Wearside is a real statement of intent from the new Sunderland ownership, and the option to make the deal a permanent one gives the Black Cats first refusal if he has an impressive season on Wearside.

The German youth international has scored goals at every level and was part of the Bayern Munich II side that won the German Third Division title.

Dajaku will wear the number seven shirt during his time at the Stadium of Light and Phillips is backing him to be a huge success.

Phillips told Football Insider: “You are not at Bayern Munich unless you have got some serious ability.

“It will of course be a big jump coming to Sunderland. But, receiving the number seven shirt will have given the lad a big confidence boost. It will give him a huge lift.

“I am excited to see what he brings to the side. The scouting this season has been brilliant. The players they have brought in have done really well so far.

“I cannot judge the lad until I’ve seen him but I would certainly back the judgement of the recruitment department. The players that have come in have looked great. I’m excited to see more of them.”
