Kevin Phillips makes Sunderland takeover claim as he comments on Micky Gray's Black Cats bid

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips claims he has been contacted by a consortium who are looking into the possibility of buying the club.

The Black Cats remain on the market with owner Stewart Donald confirming he is looking for a buyer in a heated meeting with fans' representatives last week. He then caused fury by slapping a £37.6m asking price on the club.

A number of parties are said to be interested in buying the club, though, and one man who is trying to drum up interest in the Black Cats is former Sunderland defender Micky Gray.

Gray took to his Twitter account on Thursday morning to update fans that he is doing his 'very best' but that things remain complicated.

Phillips played alongside Gray during Peter Reid's Golden Era at the Stadium of Light and the pair both won caps for England together.

When asked about Gray's involvement in a potential takeover bid, Phillips not only offered his verdict on his former team-mate's efforts but also claimed another consortium had reached out to him to find out more about the club.

“Micky is acting as a go between," Phillips told Football Insider.

“If there was a takeover it would not be his own money going in there, not like when Quinny [Niall Quinn] came in.

“From what I can gather Micky is a contact between the consortium and the football club and that is the right move.

“Any potential investors that want to buy the football club should be reaching out to players who know the football club and have been there a long time.

“I had someone ring me three weeks ago that was leading a consortium, asking what the club is like and digging deep.

"They wanted to hear it from people that have an affection for the club. That is the right thing to do.”
