Kevin Phillips left 'surprised' after Aiden O'Brien's reported near Sunderland exit

Kevin Phillips has admitted he was 'surprised' to see Aiden O'Brien come close to leaving the club on deadline day.

The Black Cats forward hasn't started a league game for Lee Johnson's side yet, but is their top goal scorer in the Carabao Cup with four goals inside two games.

O'Brien was one of the main figures in Johnson's side last season, operating just behind top goalscorer Charlie Wyke.

However, Ross Stewart has been the go to man for Sunderland up front this campaign with Elliot Embleton, Aiden McGeady and Lynden Gooch operating in behind.

As a result, O'Brien was linked with a shock loan departure to Doncaster Rovers.

The revelation has raised questions about the 27-year-old's long-term future on Wearside, with his contract up next summer.

Phillips has told Football Insider that he was shocked to see O'Brien linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light.

He said: “I am surprised to hear that, to be honest.

“This season you want people in your squad who know where the back of the net is. There will be times where Ross Stewart is suspended or injured this season and in O’Brien you have a player who knows League One.

"He scored a great hat-trick in the cup and he knows where the back of the net is. That’s why I’m surprised they would consider allowing him to leave on loan. He has that experience.

“Luckily it has not happened but perhaps there will be some movement in January. We will have to watch this space.”
