Kevin Phillips blasts Sunderland’s decision to sell Joe Hugill to Manchester United

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has blasted the decision to sell academy prospect Joe Hugill to Manchester United.

The former Black Cats youngster had been hitting the headlines in recent weeks after a blistering start to the season since moving to Old Trafford.

The 17-year-old netted four goals in Manchester United-U23s win over Liverpool and had nine goals in 12 outings this season.

His form caught the eye of Ole Gunnar Solkjaer who said Hugill could be in line for a call up to the first team.

Phillips believes his former side made a massive mistake letting the youngster go before he could make an appearance for the first team on Wearside.

Speaking to Football Insider Phillips said: “I can believe it, just because of what’s gone on at Sunderland over the last 18 months in terms of their best young players just to make a few quid.

“I can believe it but if I’m a Sunderland supporter now, and I am a Sunderland fan, I’m fuming because you’ve got a player on your books there that could potentially come into your squad this year and score you goals to get you out the league.

“It’s not good news, is it really, for the fans? It doesn’t surprise me but good luck to the kid, he’s gone to a big club and he’s shining so I hope it works out for him."
