Kevin Phillips believes Sunderland's new kit deal can help attract buyers for takeover

Kevin Phillips believes Sunderland's new deal with Nike should make the club a more attractive prospect to potential buyers.

Stewart Donald is actively seeking to sell the football club and told BBC Newcastle this week that there has been 'huge interest' in a Sunderland takeover and that 'a number of parties are engaged in due diligence', which offers groups an opportunity to take a closer look at the club, its infrastructure and its financial records.

And Phillips believes the chances of securing a takeover will have been increased substantially last week when the club announced a major new kit supplier deal with Nike.

Phillips told Football Insider: "To have the biggest brand in the world wanting to be able to sponsor your kit, there will be a nice cash injection there.

Sunderland announce season card renewal dates

“We are still in the dark about the club being sold, that has gone very quiet about that. Maybe that is to do with the run Sunderland have been on, I am not sure.

“Nike sponsoring you makes it a better proposition for a potential buyer. When you come in you have a big brand on board as well. These things help."

But even if there isn't a takeover, Phillips says he hopes the cash injection from the deal can be put to good use for matters on the pitch.

He continued: “You like to think if there is a cash injection it can be used in the right way and that is on the squad and developing the squad.”
