Kevin Phillips believes Newcastle could have pulled off the 'signing of the season'

Newcastle's capture of Callum Wilson 'could turn out to be the signing of the season'.

That is the verdict of former Premier League Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips who believes the £20million the Magpies paid for the England international is a 'very good price'.

Wilson penned a four-year deal at St James' Park on Monday and was joined by his former Bournemouth team-mate Ryan Fraser and highly rated Norwich left-back Jamal Lewis in joining Newcastle this week.

Phillips is excited to see Wilson and Fraser rekindle their partnership in the North East and feels Wilson is a bargain in comparison to the £28million Aston Villa have paid for Brentford forward Ollie Watkins.

“When you look at what Villa just paid for Ollie Watkins who has only played in the Championship, I think £20million is a very good price for Wilson," Phillips told Football Insider.

“I think that could turn out to be the signing of the season. He might get into double figures next season which would make £20million look like nothing.

“Wilson is a player that was playing for England not too long ago. That is a great signing and by getting Ryan Fraser through the door as well you have two lads that know each other very well.”
