Backup quarterback isn’t a role you want to see used often, but when they are in the game, it’s an important one.
Late in the 2021 season, the Minnesota Vikings ultimately had to go to their backup quarterback in a make-or-break Week 16 due to starting quarterback Kirk Cousins being unvaccinated and contracting COVID-19.
Sean Mannion got the start, but last year’s third-round draft selection, Kellen Mond, was able to get into the game. Things didn’t go well for Mond in his three plays, including almost throwing an interception on his third play.
Mond contracted COVID-19 at the beginning of training camp last season, which stunted his development from the get-go. He also lost upwards of 25 pounds due to the virus. Former head coach Mike Zimmer didn’t like Mond, and his lack of progress through the season reflected that.
This year, however, brings a new start for Mond. New head coach Kevin O’Connell said there would be a genuine competition for the backup quarterback job, and he is living up to his word.

This is a big step for Mond, as he looks to prove that he belongs both as the backup and potential future starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.
