Kevin O’Connell dishes on how to divide up touches for talented RB room

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell has a good problem on his hands.

O’Connell has to figure out how to divide touches to a running back depth chart that reads Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice and Chris Thompson.

Easier said than done. O’Connell touched on this subject during his Friday presser, according to Hogs Haven’s By Scott Jennings:

“…Derrius’ ability to make people miss in space is something that I’m always trying to find on early downs in the pass game. So, from the standpoint of touches ‒ that’s how I talk to AP and Derrius, I say touches. One guy might have 10 carries, the other guy might have five, but then the other guy with five carries has four receptions. It’s touches…”

Last week’s win over Carolina provided a pretty good example of this. Guice carried it 10 times, Peterson 13. Thompson had two targets. Both Guice and Thompson had two targets through the air.

Really, it doesn’t always have to be this even. But it sure doesn’t hurt to keep everyone both fresh and happy.

On paper, game flow could end up having a bigger impact on this sort of touch distribution over the final few games. But the latest win is a good example of everything going right for a running back depth chart where everyone got a good taste of chances to contribute.
