Kevin Muscat won't join Celtic with former Rangers defender not involved in summer rebuild

Kevin Muscat won’t be joining Ange Postecoglou at Celtic.

The former Rangers defender was heavily linked with a role as assistant to Postecoglou, but it’s understood that now won’t happen.

The former Australia boss is expected to be confirmed as Hoops manager later this week.

And reports down under suggested Muscat was being lined up as his right hand man.

He had been assistant to him at Melbourne Victory before taking the manager’s role on himself.

But the Daily Record report that Muscat won’t be joining Celtic as part of the summer rebuild.

The former defender spent a season at Ibrox under Alex McLeish and had previously admitted his frustration at not getting to play in an Old Firm game.

He was part of the team that won the treble in 2002/03 before joining Milwall.

Postecoglou faces a delay before being officially allowed to take over as Celtic manager, with John Kennedy set to welcome the players back for pre-season.

The Greek-born boss doesn't hold the relevant coaching badges to coach in Europe, although an appeal has been made to UEFA that is likely to be approved.

He also faces a quarantine period when he arrives in the UK before he can take training, and that is likely to be in a pre-season trip to Wales.
