Kevin Muscat will NOT be Celtic assistant despite Aussie reports claiming he will follow Ange Postecoglou to Glasgow

Kevin Muscat will NOT follow Ange Postecoglou to Celtic as assistant manager, Record Sport understands.

Reports in Australia indicated that the former Rangers defender was in prime position to come in as assistant to the new man.

However, Parkhead sources insist that Muscat, who spent one season at Ibrox under Alex McLeish, will be nowhere near the summer rebuild.

Postecoglou is believed to have agreed personal terms to take over at Celtic, with his last game as Yokohama F Marinos boss likely to be Wednesday's cup clash with Honda.

The 55-year-old is also waiting on a UEFA decision over a certificate of competency that will allow him to sit on the Celtic Park bench.

Though the Greek-Australian boss holds the highest badge from the Australian FA, the European governing body only considers that equalivalent to an A Licence.

All manager must have a Pro Licence to take charge of a top flight team but exemptions can be made to give them a chance to attain the qualification.

Given that Postecoglou has won league titles in Australia and Japan, as well as the Asian Cup with the Socceroos, it's unlikely that application would be turned down.

Current assistant John Kennedy will welcome the squad back to training on June 17, however, as Postecoglou will enter a mandatory quarantine after flying in from Japan.

The new man will have a big job on his hands as the club looks to bounce back from the agony of missing out on 10 In A Row.

Key men Ryan Christie, Kris Ajer and Odsonne Edouard are all set to depart with Champions League qualifiers looming next month.
