Kevin Mbabu may have left for Wolfsburg - but his bond with Newcastle remains

Kevin Mbabu has completed an £8m move to Wolfsburg - and his former Newcastle team-mates have been quick to congratulate him.

The Switzerland international spent four years on the Magpies' books before joining Young Boys in 2017 following a successful end to his loan spell in Bern.

Mbabu was at the heart of Young Boys' remarkable title win - their first in 32 years - and played against Manchester United and Juventus in the Champions League earlier this season.

Unsurprisingly, his impressive performances have caught the eye of scouts in Europe's top leagues and Wolfsburg announced on Thursday that Mbabu will join the Bundesliga giants on a four-year deal in the summer.

Mbabu's former Newcastle team-mates have been quick to pay tribute and Gini Wijnaldum, Loic Remy, Rolando Aarons, Nile Ranger, James Tavernier and Ivan Toney are among those to send congratulatory messages.

With Newcastle in the market for at least one full-back this summer, the move has got fans reminiscing about Mbabu's displays in black and white, principally that impressive performance against champions Chelsea on his full debut in 2015.

Steve McClaren had to contend with injuries to Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett at left-back so Mbabu was thrown in at the deep end - and impressed in the 2-2 draw.

But it was as good as it got for Mbabu - who was injured for the majority of his time at the club and readily admits he could have done more when it came to sleeping, stretching and nutrition.

Mbabu looks back on his time at St James' Park fondly, though, and previously admitted he it would be his dream to return to play in England one day. Don't bet against it.
