Kevin Maguire: Wounded May and Corbyn must be praying for royal baby's arrival

The Duchess of Sussex’s baby can’t be born fast enough for Theresa May or Jeremy Corbyn.

The leaders of a collapsing Conservative Government, and a Labour opposition styling itself as a Government-in-waiting, are both anxious to divert public attention and headlines.

Because there is no hiding the fact England’s council elections were terrible for the Tories and disappointing for Labour.

The only clear winner was Vince Cable, who is possibly regretting pre-announcing his resignation as leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Yet Corbyn and Labour would’ve gained councillors and local authorities, plus vote share, if they were on the verge of power instead of going backwards.

The nation’s raspberry blown at the two major parties yielded a juicy haul for revived Lib Dems.

Tories crushed in local elections as voters give Theresa May kick in the ballots

No longer can Corbyn take Labour’s pro-European majority for granted when the Libs and Greens, never mind the Change breakaway, offers them a new home.

And the local elections demonstrate why Labour has more to gain than lose by championing loudly the democracy of a fresh referendum on Europe.

Council results require a pinch of salt.

But in weeks the whole of the UK is able to vote in the European Parliament elections, with Fat Cat Nigel Farage’s Brexit mob tipped to finish ahead of bruised Labour and battered Tories.

Until then May and Corbyn are relying on that royal baby to enter the world and spare their blushes.
