Kevin Maguire: Prioritise NHS workers, grab coronavirus test kits and nationalise manufacturers

Seizing £375 private coronavirus test kits for the NHS to use would show that we really are all in this crisis together.

Inequality kills when a selfish wealthy few protect themselves at the cost of the public many.

Every medical worker forced into quarantine at home for up to two weeks because the NHS is unable to check if a cough is the virus puts lives at risk.

It sticks in my throat that multi-millionaire actor Idris Elba was tested (and admittedly found positive) despite showing no symptoms when all frontline doctors, nurses and ambulance crews aren’t tested.

The Government must take emergency powers to requisition test kits and nationalise the profit-hungry manufacturers and distributors.

During the Second World War, companies were controlled by the state and instructed to manufacture the armaments required to defeat Hitler. To build Spitfires, Hurricanes tanks and destroyers.

In this war against coronavirus, the weapons are test kits, face masks, protective gear and ventilators.

We won’t minimise casualties by permitting the rich to go it alone – modern versions of the monied
class who bought champagne
on the black market while working class families huddled together in air raid shelters.

Either we’re all in this together, or a them and us divide will see us die and the wealthy live.

Grab those kits now, without compensation. It has to be done for the common good.
