Kevin Kilbane believes Premier League season should be abandoned to help it 'get back to normality'

Kevin Kilbane believes the Premier League season should be abandoned to help it "get back to normality".

The former Ireland international thinks England's top tier should follow the example of the Netherlands, whose top tier The Eredivisie has been shelved for the season with no title winners and no teams relegated.

Referencing the decision of the Dutch FA, Kilbane wrote on Twitter: "I know there’s a big gap and a likely winner of this season’s PL but this is the only way I see us getting back to normality again.

"Harsh but unprecedented times!"

The likely winners Kilbane refers to, of course, are Liverpool and their fans will surely not be in agreement with the former Everton wide man.

Liverpool are 25 points clear of second place Manchester City and looked nailed on for their first league title since 1990 before the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the competition.

While countries such as Belgium have followed the decision of the Netherlands in cancelling their campaigns, the Bundesliga recently announced they were prepared to resume their season again by May 9.

But it is likely that any resumption of the Premier League in the coming months will take place behind closed doors.

Earlier this week UK culture secretary Oliver Dowden said: "I think the financial reality for most clubs is their biggest source of income is the direct transfers they get from the Premier League.

"So if we got that running in some way behind closed doors then that would relieve the pressure on all other clubs."
