Kevin Keegan pays Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp the ultimate compliment

Jurgen Klopp is closing in on legendary status at Liverpool and can now be mentioned in the same breath as Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, believes Kevin Keegan.

The Liverpool boss masterminded the club’s greatest European night in history as the Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 in the Champions League semi-final - and there’s still a chance of a first Premier League title.

Shankly won 10 trophies during his time in charge, including three league titles and the UEFA Cup, while Paisley won three European Cups, a Uefa Cup, six League titles and three League Cups.

Klopp is yet to win any silverware but has taken Liverpool to two Champions League finals, as well as the Europa League and EFL Cup finals.

“Jurgen Klopp gets it. Yes, he’s German. But he’s a German Scouse! He got it from day one," he told BBC Sport.

“You could see that by the way he would run up and down the touchline, kicking every ball, heading it. That’s what the fans love.

“I’m not saying that Bill Shankley or Bob Paisley were quite as animated in their day. But Klopp just fits.

“Where they can go from here is incredible. They’re on an upward curve. But they’ve got to hold onto their players, that’s the key.”

Jurgen Klopp delivers one final message to Liverpool supporters as Reds aim for Premier League title

Keegan reckons it’s imperative Liverpool retain the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane to ensure they remain competitive for years to come.

“If (Real Madrid) come calling it can certainly disrupt. I left when it’s going well and people would ask why.

“Players leave if a club tempts them and Real Madrid would tempt anyone so you can’t blame the players for that.

“Barcelona has already tempted two great Liverpool players in Suarez and Coutinho so they need to keep the current ones.”
