Kevin Johnson: New dad killed after asking lads outside his home to be quiet

Kevin was just 22 years old when he left his home to confront three lads about their rowdy behaviour in the street, which was disturbing his baby son.

But the law-abiding demolition worker could never have imagined how dangerous his plea for quiet would become, or that the young thugs would be armed.

Kevin was stabbed repeatedly after approaching the trio, on Sunderland's Pennywell estate, in May 2007.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The senseless act of violence left Kevin's seven-month-old son, Chaise, without a dad.

The teens, Dean Curtis, Tony Hawkes and Jordan Towers all denied murder but were found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.

However, the court heard it was impossible to say who delivered the fatal blow.

Curtis, then 19 and of Forest Road , was told he must serve a minimum of 17 years, while Hawkes, 17 and of Mortimer Street at the time, was jailed for at least 16 years.

Towers, of Fell Road, who had been just 16 at the time of the murder was ordered to serve a minimum of 13 years.

It was proven that he did not use a knife, but he was convicted of murder under the controversial 'joint enterprise law'. His family have since campaigned tirelessly to clear his name.
