Kevin Hogan is early favorite to win Broncos’ backup QB job after HOF Game

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock still has four preseason games to convince the team that he can be the No. 2 quarterback this coming season, but he didn’t do that on Thursday night.

Lock’s stats don’t look terrible. He completed 7-of-11 passes for 34 yards. However, it is clear that he has plenty of growing to do as a player and four weeks may not be enough time for that to happen.

He settled down later in the game, but started out shaky, overthrowing receivers and throwing way behind them as well.

Kevin Hogan didn’t exactly shine, but his experience alone puts him above Lock in the race for the team’s backup at this particular time. He completed 5-of-8 passes for 37 yards but seemed to have a much better command of the offense, which isn’t a surprise at this juncture.

Hogan started the game and led the team on its first scoring drive, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Khalfani Muhammad. Lock was given the most work of any of the team’s quarterbacks by far, but was the only one who didn’t lead the team on a scoring drive.

Lock is a young player with a ton of arm talent, but he clearly has some hurdles to overcome.
