Kevin Hogan, Brett Rypien uninspiring in Broncos’ 10-6 loss to Rams

With starter Joe Flacco resting for the regular season and rookie Drew Lock recovering from a thumb injury, the Broncos started Kevin Hogan in Saturday’s preseason game against the Rams on Saturday evening.

Hogan played most of the first half and completed 8-of-12 passes for 69 yards, good for a 81.6 passer rating. He also rushed four times for 14 yards.

Hogan was replaced by undrafted rookie Brett Rypien just before halftime. Rypien went 14-of-23 for 80 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The rookie finished the contest with a 49.2 passer rating.

The Broncos lost 10-6, dropping to 1-3 in preseason.

With neither of Denver’s backup quarterbacks playing well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos look for a veteran QB after NFL teams trim their rosters next week. Denver — and every other team — most go from 90 players to 53 players by Saturday, Aug. 31.

Before getting to roster cuts, though, the Broncos will have one more game to play. Denver will face the Cardinals on Thursday, Aug. 29.
