Kevin Hogan, Brett Rypien haven’t shown enough to win Broncos’ backup job

Broncos backup quarterbacks Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien haven’t performed well in preseason and neither one has proven he is ready to serve as Denver’s backup in Week 1.

That means either Hogan or Rypien will have to have a big game against the Cardinals on Thursday or the Broncos will have to bring in a veteran after NFL teams trim their rosters later this week.

“I’d like to see some separation from them,” coach Vic Fangio before practice Monday. “We’ve got one more game to do that. That remains to be seen. I’ve seen some good play. I’ve seen some not so good, so I don’t know the answer to that just yet.”

After mentioning the competition between Hogan and Rypien, Fangio was asked about the possibility of bringing in a veteran.

“That’s always an option, but as you see out there there’s not a lot of them available,” Fangio said.

More will become available this weekend. Stay tuned.
