Kevin Hart's 'major' injuries revealed following horror car crash in California

Kevin Hart has sustained 'major back injuries' in a horror car accident in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning, it has been reported.

The 40-year-old US comedian was passenger in a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda when the driver is said to have which tumbled down an embankment in the Malibu Hills.

Dad-of-three Hart was initially well enough to reach his home for medical attention, reports CHP, but he was later taken to Northbridge Hospital Medical Centre for treatment.

According to CNN, both Hart and the driver, Jared Black sustained 'major back injuries.'

Hart may need surgery to repair the damage but doctors are said to be optimistic he will make a full recovery, sources close to the stand-up told The Blast.

Police told TMZ that driver Black, 28, was found pinned in his seat under the crushed roof of the car.

The US site also reports that the fire department had to saw the roof off to free the occupants.

Hart's vehcle is said to have veered off the winding road on the Mulholland Highway before smashing through a wooden fence and ending in a ditch.

Officers determined that Black was not under the influence of alcohol in the car.

A third occupant did not suffer injuries.

Back in July, Kevin Hart posted to a picture of the 720bhp muscle motor - he named Menance - to Instagram , telling fans it was a present to himself for his 40th birthday.

"I added some more muscle to the family for my 40th... welcome home 'Menace.'" he wrote.

Pictures of Sunday's crash have revealed the devastating damage to the vehicle.

The roof of Kevin's car is missing and there's severe damage to the bodywork. While the front wheels also appear to be hanging off.

Witnesses of the collision say Kevin had been the first to get out of the car, and that a member of his security team showed up in an SUV to pick him up.

Kevin, star of 2017's Jumani: Welcome to the Jungle, is yet to speak out on the incident.
