Kevin Hart says he views the major car crash he experienced last year as a “resurrection”.
The comedian suffered three spinal fractures after the collision in September in Calabasas, California.
He told Men’s Health that his surgeon said he could have been left paralysed if those fractures had been located just a couple millimetres closer to his spine.
Hart said of the crash: “It’s a resurrection. That’s the best way for me to put it.
“I feel like the other version of myself died in that moment and this new version was born to understand and to do better.”
He added: “Sometimes you’re not going to get it when you’re supposed to get it. But when it comes and that light bulb goes off, holy f***.”
The interview was conducted just three months after the collision. Hart invited the interviewer into his gym during a workout session, which was in stark contrast with the extensive injuries he suffered during the crash.
“I’m not trying to get back to where I was before – I want to be better than before,” he said of the workouts.
Back in November last year, Hart gave an emotional speech at the E! People’s Choice Awards, which marked his first public appearance since the collision.
“First and foremost, I thank God because I definitely don’t have to be here,” he said.
“Being that I am, it makes me appreciate life even more. It makes me appreciate the things that really matter.”
