Timberwolves training camp is looming _ the first practice is Tuesday _ and the question of Kevin Garnett's future with the team remains unanswered.
In an interview Wednesday morning, Wolves president of basketball operations and head coach Tom Thibodeau said a decision will come out of talks between Garnett and Wolves owner Glen Taylor, who also owns the Star Tribune.
"Glen and Kevin and his representatives are in discussions," Thibodeau said. "We'll keep that private for now, and we'll see how it unfolds. But, obviously, what Kevin has meant to our league, the organization, he's earned the right to have those discussions with Glen."
Presumably those talks include Garnett's health and his ability _ and desire _ top play a 22nd NBA season. Garnett, 40, is under contract, due to be paid $8 million.
A cornerstone of the Wolves during their eight-year playoff run, Garnett was traded to Boston after the 2006-07 season; Garnett and the Celtics won the NBA title the following spring.
Garnett returned to the team in February of 2015 in a trade with Brooklyn. The late Flip Saunders, then the Wolves' president of basketball operations and head coach, convinced Garnett to waive his no-trade clause and return to the team as a mentor to the team's younger players.
He was sidelined by knee soreness after five games following the trade that season. Last season he was limited to 38 games before again being sidelined by knee soreness.
