Kevin Durant announces number change from No. 35 to No. 7

LeBron James appears to have started a trend among NBA superstars this summer by changing from No. 23 to No. 6, giving No. 23 to his new teammate Anthony Davis.

Newly minted Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant announced that he would be changing from his iconic No. 35 jersey to the No. 7 as a member of the Nets on Sunday night at 7 p.m. EST. Durant gave an explanation via his group, which is still named 35Ventures. He expressed that he wanted a fresh start.

Durant taking the No. 7 is bringing back memories for some of Kobe Bryant being the No. 24, one more than his idol Michael Jordan. Whether one-upping LeBron’s new number is part of the plan we can’t know, but moves by stars of this magnitude can hardly be chalked up to simple coincidence.

While LeBron James didn’t state he was giving up No. 23 to have a fresh start himself, it’s not a bad idea given how disappointing his one season as the Lakers No. 23 went.

Also, it appears Durant and his new teammate Kyrie Irving are going for a funny nickname of 7-11.
