Kevin De Bruyne is set to miss Belgium's Euro 2020 opener with manager Roberto Martinez unsure when the Manchester City midfielder will be fit to play.

The 29-year-old suffered facial fractures following a collision with Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger during the Champions League Final last week but did not require surgery.

Belgium are one of the favourites for Euro 2020 and begin their campaign against Russia next Saturday, June 12, but will likely have to start Group B without their star man.

Martinez has also revealed that when De Bruyne does return, he will wear a protective face mask similar to the one worn by compatriot and former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen in 2019.

"De Bruyne is unlikely to be fit for that first match so whoever replaces him will have to show he's ready," Martinez said.

"We made a decision about his mask. It will be one of the producers who made Jan Vertonghen's mask. We were very satisfied with that.

"I would say that until next week we won't know exactly where we are with Kevin. Now, allow him to relax.

"He could be available for the Euros but we don't know when at the moment. It's too early to give you an answer now, we must first get the green light from the medical side."
