Kevin De Bruyne hails Liverpool's 'remarkable effort' - but feels no sympathy for Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has praised Liverpool for their "remarkable effort" in reaching 97 points - but admitted he feels little sympathy for the Premier League runners-up.

The Reds came closer to winning a 19th league title than they have in the last 29 years as they finished the campaign with the most points a second-placed team has ever amassed.

However, Pep Guardiola's champions edged Jurgen Klopp's side out, retaining their title with 98 points to make it 198 over two seasons for City.

Liverpool lost just once all season - at City, in January - but were forced to settle for a silver medal last Sunday, despite beating Wolves 2-0 on the final day of the season.

De Bruyne, who was limited to just 19 appearances due to a succession of injuries, insists he doesn't feel sorry for Klopp and his squad.

He told The Telegraph : "It’s a remarkable effort, but it means that we were just better than them in the end.

"I don’t feel sorry for them, because I don’t think they’d feel sorry for us.

"I don’t think anybody felt sorry about the way we went out of the Champions League (to Tottenham). You take it."

City face Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday evening and victory for Guardiola's side will complete the first-ever domestic treble in English football.

A Wembley win will also mean the champions will meet Liverpool in the Community Shield in August.
