Kevin De Bruyne warned his Manchester City team-mates they “need to learn” after their Champions League upset against Lyon.
Pep Guardiola’s side suffered yet more heartache in Europe as they were beaten 3-1 in their quarter-final clash in Portugal.
Maxwel Cornet gave the French side the lead in the first half before De Bruyne levelled things after the break.
City found themselves on the end of more VAR controversy in the Champions League when Moussa Dembele made it 2-1, despite seemingly fouling Aymeric Laporte in the build-up.
And the former Celtic man secured Lyon’s place in the semi-final against Bayern Munich, just 60 seconds after Raheem Sterling had missed a glorious opportunity to pull his side back level.
Despite the controversy surrounding the way in which Lyon got back into the lead, De Bruyne was in no mood to blame VAR for City exiting the competition.
And having missed out on a first semi-final place since 2016, the Belgian had a stark warning for his side.
“Different year, same stuff,” De Bruyne told BT Sport.
“First half wasn’t good enough, I think we know that, we started slow and didn’t have many options.
“Second half, we played really well, we came back to 1-1 and had all the chances, and then obviously it’s 2-1 and 3-1, and that ends the game.
“It’s a shame for us to go out in that way.”
On the controversy surrounding Lyon’s second goal, De Bruyne added: “I’ve not seen it back, so whatever they decided, they decided. I’m not going to blame that, we should have done better.
“I think in the second half we played well, we had them under pressure and were more offensive like we normally are.
“Their keeper made a few saves, and even at 2-1 if Raz (Sterling) scores the goal it’s 2-2 and the game goes on, but that’s football, they’re the fine margins that make a difference, and they made it 3-1.
“The game was open, but I think they didn’t really create much apart from the two goals.
“We need to learn. It’s not good enough.”
