Kevin De Bruyne broke nose and fractured eye socket in sickening Antonio Rudiger clash

Kevin De Bruyne says he suffered a broken nose and fractured eye socket in his Champions League final clash with Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger.

The Manchester City star was forced off after an hour of the clash in Porto, and looked visibly distressed when he left the field.

"Hi guys just got back from the hospital," tweeted De Bruyne on Sunday morning.

"My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now.

"Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back."

De Bruyne's departure was a huge blow to City's hopes of getting back into the game, which Chelsea eventually won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz.

City boss Pep Guardiola was criticised for his team selection before the match, with his decision to leave out both midfielders Fernandinho and Rodri a surprise, with Ilkay Gundogan and De Bruyne stationed in midfield..

"I decided the decision, to have quality players. Gundogan played many years in this position.

"To have speed, to find the small players, the quality, the brilliant players, inside, in the middle and between the lines. This was the decision."

Asked if he regretted the move, he added: "I don't know - the decisions I made, the players did everything to try to win the game."

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admitted that he was surprised by Guardiola's decision on his midfield.

"We were a bit surprised, I expected Fernandinho in the line-up to start," Tuchel admitted after the game.

"He chose a very offensive line-up, a very technical line-up, it was very hard to steal the ball and recover the ball.

"Everything else we more or less expected.

"We expected that they wanted us to pin on the side, very, very wide. So it was very important that we stepped out with Azpi and Toni constantly out of the back five to support our midfield. It was important to stay in a block in our front five to avoid diagonal switch of play, this is what we tried to implement and follow.

"It was a strong bond, we were absolutely sure we had to play with a strong bond and genuine belief with what we did.

"Minute after minute we could grab some ball possession we could win more and more second balls and initiate some dangerous counter attacks which gave us confidence, and from then on it was a tough match until the end."
