Kevin de Bruyne asked about Man City captaincy role

Kevin de Bruyne has admitted he would want to take the captain's armband at Manchester City after Vincent Kompany left the club over the summer.

Kompany's departure to Anderlecht at the end of last season means the club have a decision to make over who takes the armband and Pep Guardiola explained it was a decision that would be made by the players rather than him.

"They will chose the captain when we are all together. After they (the players) are all back going to make a meeting and decide who is going to be captain," Guardiola said after City had beaten West Ham 4-1 in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Nanjing China.

Guardiola was asked if it would be David Silva taking the armband in his last season but De Bruyne explained why he would like the honour.

"If the team wants me to be captain I will gladly accept it," the Belgian international said. "But, I think everyone needs to talk about it as a team and as a club. It will be spoken about when everyone comes back.

"I think we need to do that together because it's really important job not only on the pitch but off it."

De Bruyne, who came on as a half time substitute in the win in Nanjing, praised the younger players in the squad after academy players Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were handed their first team debuts.

"If you play for one of the best clubs players in the world to be a youth player and get through you have to be exceptional," he said.

"I started in Belgium, the level is not the same as it is here it's maybe easier to get more chances. If you want to play for us you know what the level is and if you perform on the pitch you will get the chance. I think they did really well and I'm happy to see that. A great moment for many of them to start for the first time for a club like us."
