Kevin De Bruyne agrees with Harry Kane's Premier League solution that will anger Liverpool fans

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has called for the Premier League season to be cancelled.

The Belgium playmaker believes the current campaign should be ended due to fears of mass injuries if clubs are forced to play a number of games in a short space of time.

The Premier League is set to meet on Friday to discuss its next steps, with all action in the top-flight currently suspended until the end of April at the earliest.

If the governing body was to declare the campaign null and void, then Liverpool, who are just two wins from the title and 25 points clear at the top of the table, could be denied their first league title for 30 years.

And although De Bruyne has admitted he would like to see the campaign finished, he believes player safety should come first and officials may ultimately be left with no option but to cancel the season.

“I have no idea if we will still play,” he said. "In England, they want to wait as long as possible with a decision.

"But, as a footballer, that is not evident. You're idle for six weeks, normally you need a preparation of three to four weeks.

“If we restart immediately, everyone will be injured after a few games. That cannot be the intention.

"There's a lot of money involved and I think waiting so long to make a decision can cause problems for next season.

"It's not that we have a very long summer break and can just postpone everything.

“I would be sorry to stop early after such a good season, but if it avoids problems towards next year, it must be done."

The 28-year-old has also revealed that his family have been self-isolating at home after his family fell ill, but admits he is unsure if they had coronavirus.

"My youngest son has been ill, then my oldest son, then my wife," De Bruyne said.

"There were some symptoms, but I have no idea if they had the coronavirus or not. We self-isolated and now everyone is fine again."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has also called for the Premier League to scrap the season if matches cannot be resumed by the end of June.

“I know the Premier League will do everything it can to finish the season," the England captain told Jamie Redknapp on an Instagram Live Q&A session at the weekend.

"There needs to be a point where enough is enough. Probably the limit for me is the end of June.”
