Kevin Costner: Cubs are sort of 'America's team'

Jan. 12--It's hard to interview Kevin Costner without bringing up baseball. The soon-to-be 60 year old actor has appeared in classic baseball films such as "Field of Dreams" (I get a lump in my throat just mentioning that movie) and "Bull Durham" and the not as classic-y "For Love of the Game"

So when it came time to interview Costner Friday at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, I asked him about the movie he was promoting, "Black or White," in theaters Jan. 30, "The Untouchables" -- obviously, and then the Cubs and Wrigley Field.

"The idea of a professional sports team sitting in the middle of the city is still my idea of a real ball club," said Costner, seated next to "Black or White" co-star Anthony Mackie in a hotel suite. "The idea that you can say, 'Hey, Anthony, it's 2 o'clock -- let's go catch the game,' and not have it be an investment or be in the car for an hour drive ... you literally just shut the door, you walk down the street, you get a dog and you sit down. There's something very simple and honest about that.

"That's why you see a lot of these new parks in the retro fashion because people want to go back to that. But a (park) that sits inside the skyline -- there's nothing like that. And Wrigley and Fenway (Park) have that."

Despite the fact that he's a Los Angeles-area native, Costner would like to see the Cubs win the World Series. Not just for the sake of the city, but also the country.

"I know Joe (Maddon) is coaching this year," Costner said. "That's fun for me. They're a funny team -- almost America's team in a weird way. They need to win."
