Kevin Clifton's Strictly Ballroom tour delayed until 2021 as BBC plots show's return

Kevin Clifton's dance tour has been delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star had been due to appear across the country in Strictly Ballroom, a show directed by Craig Revel Horwood.

The new production - based on Baz Luhrmann's film of the same name - will now open in Plymouth at the end of September 2021 with tour dates running through to July 2022.

Clifton, 37, had been due to play Scott in the show - the role originally played by Paul Mercurio in the hit film.

The tour will stop in cities including Sunderland, Norwich, Ipswich, York, Bradford and Cardiff, Guildford when it eventually hits the road next year.

The Strictly Ballroom musical debuted in Australia in 2014 before coming to Britain for the first time in 2016.

This new version is directed by Clifton's former Strictly co-star Craig.

Clifton quit Strictly Come Dancing in March after six years working as a pro on the show, and winning the title in 2018 with his now-girlfriend Stacey Dooley.

He had planned to go back to his musical theatre roots, but his dream is now on hold.

The tour is the latest casualty of the pandemic, with Strictly's own live shows also being axed.

The pros had been due to hit the road during May and June but the tour was called off.

However, BBC bosses are working hard to ensure the TV series gets back on air in the autumn.

They are considering a raft of measures to make the show safe under new government guidlines.

The beeb's Director of Content Charlotte Moore, told The Sunday Times measures being considered include coronavirus tests and glass screens.

They are also toying with the idea of quarantining the dancing couples together - meaning they would isolate together without seeing their families for the duration of the run.

Moore explained: "We’re looking at how that would work.

"Could you quarantine people? Can we test everyone before filming? Theres a lot of work being done. It's a big task."

Moore added that show bosses are considering quarantining the celebrities and their dance partners and testing their temperatures regularly.

Another plan they are eyeing is the installation of glass screens inside the studio.
